{March 27, 2007}   Prospectus

Research Prospectus

Overview of the argument

  • At what point of a pregnancy determines if abortion is murder?  The age from conception, to generic genetic matter, to becoming a fetus is a crucial issue in determining if you are in fact killing a human being.   This issue raises a lot of questions when you look at the growing rate of aborted pregnancies being performed in the
    United States.
  • This argument is a giant part of many political debates and whether or not it is constitutionally sound; so this topic is quite recent.  The materials needed to find research for my argument are very generous, are readily available, and very recent with new findings coming to light all the time.

Pro Side

  • The pro side of this argument use the definitions of the key words used. Abortion, murder, conception, fetus, these are all key definitions that make up the arguments for demonstrating that if a fetus is not a person by definition that in no way is abortion murder.
  • According to the definition of murder abortion is not illegal nor does the mother of the child want to invoke malice on their unborn child.
  • The definition of abortion is very vague, when looked at even a miscarriage could be determined as an abortion.
  • What makes this issue so controversial is the right to life, if the zygote inside of you at early gestation is not yet a living, breathing, and human being than abortion is not by any definition murder.

Con Side

  • The con side to this argument is brought on by mostly Christian based groups with scripture.  Using the argument that God says in his Holy Bible that abortion is wrong and not accepted in his eyes.
  • Other reason that people consider abortion murder is for their reasoning behind it.  In their eyes the person getting the abortion is wrong and done for social reasons because they are not ready for a baby.  At the time that a woman realizes that they are or might be pregnant the heart has already begun to develop and beat and as weeks pass more things start to develop.
  • While the research on any pro life website seems to provide the same information what’s interesting is that also included is a link to Planned Parenthood or some type of similar link.

Are you pro or con?

  • I am defiantly pro with this topic.  There are a lot of reasons why someone could terminate a pregnancy.  I don’t think that a person should be labeled a murderer just because of a choice that you make.  My overall opinion is that in this life, in this world there are many choices, abortion just happens to be one.

What have you learned in your research so far?

  • I’ve actually learned that there are more people that are for abortion than not.  Most of the websites that I have found demonstrating pro life is very Christian based and are riddled with scripture.  What’s interesting is that they do have a link some type of Planned Parenthood website so that expectant mother’s can get help.
  • The articles that I have found supporting pro choice are very interesting the way that they justify abortion not being murder.  I happen to agree with their justification and bring a very good argument to the table.

Have I found statistics?

  • No

Have I found support for my side of the argument?

  • Yes, there are many scholarly articles written in support of abortion of a fetus not considered murder.

Have I found support for the counterarguments?

  • Yes, several pro life websites

What do you still need to find in your research?

  • Statistics of abortions performed in the
    United States
  • The actual week to week development from conception to fetus
  • Statistics of people who are for and against abortion

Paragraph 1:  Introduces the reader into what bioethicists are called upon to do and how they bring to the table new technologies to make people aware of advances.

Paragraph 2:  Informing the reader about the 6 year old girl, her families decisions in her health care, and their reasoning for it.

Paragraph 3:  Dvorsky gives the reader his views on the story and why he came to the conclusion to agree with the parents.

Paragraph 4:  Describe’s the girls condition and her mental capacity.

Paragrpah 5:  Informing the reader of how she is dependent on her caregiver’s and how they are making it easy on themselves to inject her with estrogen instead of adapting.

Paragrpah 6:  Shows that even though people may object to the treatments that they do have a reason behind them.

Paragraph 7:  Dvorsky is bringing to light that since the child is in an infant state of mind that the estrogen is not to benefit her but to benefit the parents.

Paragraph 8,9, &10:  All clarifying that the estrogen is all to the parents benefit and that an overdose of this drug is a valid concern

Paragraph 11:  Again, I think that Dvorsky points out that the parents are not helping their daughter grow by any means like they think that they are, they are just keeping her in her infancy.

Paragraph 12 & 13:  These paragraphs pretty much sum up that this situation as a whole is not desirable for any family but I think really brings to light that the parents are just being lazy and catering to themselves and not thir daughter.

I think that I could narrow the topic of abortion down to the time line of procedures for abortion and at what stage the fetus is at. Arguing the point that at what stage of abortion is o.k. to continue with and when is it just murder.

For Example:

**Fetal Facts**

*At 18-25 days a baby’s heart begins to beat and their brain starts to function

*At 11 weeks a baby can squint their eyes, make fists, and swallow

**Abortion Procedures at 18-25 days**

*You can have an early medical abortion(go into detail about the procedure)

** Abortion Procedure at 11 weeks**

*Suction Procedure( details about the procedure)

**Abortion Procedures during the 3rd trimester**

*Induction Abortion(details)

*Dialation and Extraction Procedure(details)

Has anyone noticed that when you post a blog it is the way wrong time that you posted it??? I just posted my topic blog and it says that posted at 5:16 am on Tuesday???  Does anyone else have this problem or am I the only one???

I chose the topic of abortion because it is often the a controversial topic with politicians or any leader in seek of office.  Your either for or against it pro choice or pro life; my whole thinking on the issue is people need choice’s in their lives, and it just so happens that abortion is one of those choices.  I have seen the pictures of aborted fetus’, I have seen the lengths that women take to abort their unborn child, I have heard about the case of Roe VS. Wade.  Do those facts really affect the reader or do the images traumatize a student looking at it on the internet?  Does all of this really matter in your decision on whether or not you are for or against abortion?  I can’t answer that question for anyone but for myself it really has no affect on me.  Now that might sound that I am a very cold person but when you hear the word abortion it just brings to the table all kinds of issues.

Another thing that I think some people often forget to look at is the definition of the word “removal of expulsion of an embryo or fetus from the uterus, resulting in or caused by it’s death”.  So if a woman decides to have her embryo’s removed and chrogenically freeze it for another woman to be implanted into, is that an abortion?  If a woman decides to carry the baby and miscarries, is that an abortion?  According to the definition it is, but some people don’t look at that they look at the surgical procedure.

So that leaves this writer to ask herself what exactly I think…  My feelings are as I stated above, abortion is an option that we have in our society.  I am neither for nor against abortions, I feel that if a woman is raped and it is just too much for a woman to bear a child that is a constant reminder of a tragedy then it’s o.k. And then you have these women that trea an abortion like it’s just a regular doctor’s visit 3 and 4 times a month or more in some cases, that is just wrong and a slow way to kill your chances of conceiving in the future.  This topic could go in so many directions, but which one to choose?

**Answers to the ?’s**

Are you writing on an issue that is actually controversial?

     * I think that abortion is very, very controversial.  It is often the topic up for debate between candidates in any type of election or campaign.

Are you conscious of both sides of the argument?

     * There is a definite line between pro choice and pro life, yes I’ve heard both sides of the argument.

Is this a topic that needs to be expanded ot narrowed so that you are not burdened with covering information in your essay?

      * This topics can be narrowed in several different ways.

           * Discuss the constitutional aspect of abortion

           * The health care industry that provides abortions

           * How some insurance agencies pay for Viagra but not the morning after pill or some birth controls

            * The dangers that some doctor’s are in for providing and performing abortions

            * Funding for abortions clinics

            * If you are raped or molested is that the only o.k. time to have an abortion?

{March 4, 2007}   SOOOOO EXCITED!!!

I FINALLY GOT MY BLOG TO WORK!!!!!!

{March 4, 2007}   Comments on my paper

What comments have I received that emphasize the strengths in my essay? How can I maintain this type of writing in the future?

   * I have a very “strong voice” when I write, especially when I am arguing a topic that I feel very passionatly about.  What I always try to do is think about the topic and think of some type of catch phrase that would grab someone’s attention and then incorporate that into my paper to catch your eye.

What did I consider the strongest part of my essay? Do the comments reflect this belief? If so, how? If not, what can I do in a revision to make this my strongest point?

   * I definatly bring myself into the paper using what I personally think and then backing it up with some great facts and information that I find.  I always to try to make my first paragraph and conclusion really, really good so that it reassures the reader of my feelings toward the topic and then leaves them contemplating the topic itself and taking my opinion into consideration.

What comments have I received that point out weaknesses in my essay? What do I need to do to begin improving on these essays?

   * I have a tendency to stray from the topic, which was outlined by the reader in this paper.  I need to outline a little better and make sure that I stay on topic.

Could the Write Site help me with these improvements? Why or why not?

   * The write site could definitely help me out with what needs to be improved on my paper.  I have a pretty good relationship with my old high school English teacher who usually edit’s my papers for me because I don’t live in Denton.  I was very much on a time crunch with this paper and none of that got done.

Do you feel that you could adequately revise this essay and receive a better grade now that you are able to see where the weaknesses in your essay?

   * If I had the oppurtunity to revise this paper make the changes necessary, I could definately rock this paper’s world.

{March 4, 2007}   Culture Blog
  1. What (specifically) is a culture? Put this in your own words. I want to see how well you can define culture on your own.

I would define a culture as a group of people that believe in certain values, believe in certain family life, and believe in certain religions.  These things are held sacred along with their characteristics and what contributions that they bring into society. .      2. What cultures do you belong to? What specifically makes you a part of this culture?I believe that being a Texan has a huge culture in it’s self.  People asking me if I ride a horse to school or work, or asking if I  wake up at 6:00 every morning to go feed the animals.  I also believe that my Irish culture comes through with my freckles, my temper, and my name,
Erin, it means Irish princess.  That is why on St. Patty’s day you see a lot of signs that say ‘
Erin go Braugh”.  I consider that
Erin day.
J

  1. Cultures I want to know more about:

Egyptian, Irish, Arabian, German, and Native American Cherokee 4.  I have always been fascinated with the all of these cultures, even though I am Irish the only characteristics I know they do have if freckles and red hair.  I recently found out that I was part Cherokee, growing up in Virginia I was always fascinated with the history of Native Americans and how they were able to do so much with so little.  I am also German from my mom’s side so I would love to know why they tell me I have a German temper. ( Along with an Irish temper) the Arabian, because they think that we work to hard in America, but they work not as long and still get the same if not more work done than we do.
